The design for this prototype elementary school is based on a previously established “prototype” that was customized for the school District’s needs. The 80,000 SF school consists of two floors, and has a general student population capacity of 1800 students, with an additional 517 in the assembly areas. The facility includes a main entry with security vestibule, a curvilinear main circulation corridor, which creates a sense of interest, privacy and separation of spaces between the classrooms and the interactive group spaces, as well as a barrier for sound, energy, and activity. The school also includes media center, gymnasium, library, cafeteria, restrooms, offices, storage space, and classrooms. The facility design includes unique combinations of materials, colors and textures throughout the school in the form of unique patterns, motivational quotes and artwork, furniture and finishes in order to promote energy, inspiration and creativity in the young learners. LEED certification was not a goal, but daylighting was a major component of the design with use of skylights, Solatubes, and transparent glass and windows in every space.
